Artist Biography

Yusuf Ağım (b. 1996, Batman) lives and works in Batman and Istanbul. He received his BFA (2013–2018) and MFA (2019–2022) from the Painting Department of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, where he is currently pursuing his PhD. His artistic practice is centered on the ways visual experience can be constructed through painting. Observation often serves as a starting point, yet the process gradually moves toward the formation of autonomous pictorial spaces shaped by their own internal relationships.

Recurring forms, horizontal structures, color fields, and spatial arrangements play a significant role in his work, providing a framework for exploring continuity, balance, rhythm, and interconnectedness within the image. His paintings emerge through a process of transformation in which observed environments are reconfigured into new visual structures. Familiar references remain visible while becoming detached from a fixed geography or specific location, occupying an ambiguous territory between observation and construction, memory and perception. The series Landscape from Nowhere forms part of this broader inquiry, bringing together images that evoke a sense of place while resisting precise identification. Through the language of painting, his work seeks to create spaces in which perception can slow down, relationships can become visible, and familiar experiences can be encountered from new perspectives.
